Artist Paul W. Waddell examines Oklahoma’s relationship with sports and how it has impacted our culture through his exhibit Sportopia. Waddell talks about the foundation of Oklahoma sports culture and how it has contributed to the art culture in our community as well. The connection between sports and art in Oklahoma City is unlike any other he’s experienced before.
“This is the first time I’ve lived in a place where this stuff really matters to everybody. These sports figures are really important across a huge range of all kinds of people. It’s the only place I’ve been where the artists in the community are involved in sport. They’re participating, they’re yelling at their TVs, watching the games, and they actually care.”
Each piece in Waddell’s exhibit is inspired by a prominent coach or athlete in Oklahoma history. “People should expect to see a number of portraits of sports guys you may recognize. It’s kind of like a Hall of Fame. I hope everyone will come out and see my attempt to connect with this idea I had, that sports are a part of the artistic culture in Oklahoma today.”
Waddell will be signing copies of his book, “Transmorphing Utopia,” at the opening.
